Georges Binet was born 1865 in Le Havre (and died 1949 in Toulon). He is a French painter known mostly for his Normandy paintings of daily life, including beaches and river scenes.
He painted a lot of paintings in Le Havre and its surroundings (Harfleur, Octeville and Sainte-Adresse).

TODAY: The terrace in the paintings looks very closely to that found at the lower portion of the Hanging Gardens (“Jardin Suspendu”, the former fort).
TODAY: Graville used to be a suburb town, now it’s part of the city of Le Havre.
TODAY: This specific fountain no longer exists at the City Hall, but after WWII, was replaced by several others.
TODAY: The Le Havre beach is still very popular, but the tents have been replaced by wooden huts.
TODAY: The Le Havre harbour is very active, 2nd largest in France.
TODAY: The promenade is still there, but built-up with houses.
Harfleur
Harfleur (population: 8300) is a small city located close to Le Havre on the East. It’s a suburb of Le Havre.
Octeville-sur-Mer
Octeville-sur-Mer (population: 6,000) is a small town which lies against Le Havre on the North, and is the place where the Le Havre airport is located.
TODAY: The Le Havre/Octeville airport is a small regional airport with no scheduled flights, apart from some charters.
Sainte-Adresse
The city of Sainte-Adresse (population: 7,400) is an immediate suburb of Le Havre and lies to the North/West alongside the coast. It shares the same seaside promenade with Le Havre.
TODAY: The beach of Sainte-Adresse is shared with the one of Le Havre. They are joined seamlessly, including the promenade.
