Normandy

The Normandy region, consisting of Upper and Lower Normandy, is one of the famous regions in France. Rich in history dating back to the Viking invasions and the many wars with England, the country side is full of castles, fortresses, hills, forests and of course an interesting coastline.

Le Havre – The Artists – Jongkind, Johan

Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He painted marine landscapes in a free manner and is regarded as a forerunner of Impressionism. He spent quite some time on the coast of Normandy. Here are some of his works in Le Havre and surroundings.

John Cotman

Le Havre – The Artists – Cotman, John Sell

John Sell Cotman was an English marine and landscape painter, etcher, illustrator, author and a leading member of the Norwich School of painters. He was the son of rich merchants but did not follow in their footsteps. He travelled and painted extensively in Normandy.

Jonas Helmer Osslund

Le Havre – The Artists – Osslund, Helmer

Jonas Helmer Osslund, originally Åslund was a Swedish painter. He specialized in motifs from Lappland and often painted on greaseproof paper. A large part of his education as artist was in Paris, France. Here is the only painting we could find of his dealing with Le Havre.

James Wilson Morrice

Le Havre – The Artists – Morrice, James Wilson

James Wilson Morrice was a significant Canadian landscape painter. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, France, where he lived for most of his career. James Morrice Street in New Bordeaux, Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Montreal is named in his memory. He only made one painting in Le Havre that we have been able to find. Here it is.

Albert Marquet

Le Havre – The Artists – Marquet, Albert

Albert Marquet was a French painter, associated with the Fauvist movement. He initially became one of the Fauve painters and a lifelong friend of Henri Matisse. Marquet subsequently painted in a more naturalistic style, primarily landscapes, but also several portraits and, between 1910 and 1914, several female nude paintings. He painted many paintings throughout Europe, including many of the Normandy coast. Here are a few of his Le Havre and surroundings paintings.

Jean Dufy

Le Havre – The Artists – Dufy, Jean

Jean Dufy, a French painter, was born in Le Havre and painted in the Fauvism, Impressionism, Modernism, and Cubism styles/movements. His older brother, Raoul Dufy, was also an artist and became Jean’s mentor. He painted mostly in the Paris region, but did manage quite a few in Le Havre. Here are some of them.

Richard Parkes Bonington

Le Havre – The Artists – Bonington, Richard Parkes

Richard Parkes Bonington, a British artist who spent most of his life in France, died early (age 25), but managed to paint many paintings. His Romanticism Landscape style made him a popular painter in his generation. We found two of his paintings of Le Havre, and two others in the surroundings.
