The Normandy region, consisting of Upper and Lower Normandy, is one of the famous regions in France. Rich in history dating back to the Viking invasions and the many wars with England, the country side is full of castles, fortresses, hills, forests and of course an interesting coastline.

Edward William Cooke was an English landscape and marine painter, and gardener. Cooke was born in London, the son of well-known line engraver George Cooke; his uncle, William Bernard Cooke, was also a line engraver of note, and Edward was raised in the company of artists. He spent many years in The Netherlands and in Venice, Italy, but despite all his travels he managed to paint quite a lot of places in Normandy. Here are his works for Le Havre.

John Burgess Junior was a British artist. He was part of the Burgess dynasty of artists; son of John Cart Burgess (an English watercolour painter of flowers and landscapes, and an author of two books on art technique) and Charlotte Smith (a talented sculptress and silver medal winner at the Royal Academy).
Thomas Boys was born at London. He was articled to the engraver George Cooke. When his apprenticeship came to an end he went to Paris where he met and came under the influence of Richard Parkes Bonington, who persuaded him to abandon engraving for painting. We found two of his art works of the city of Bayeux.

David Roberts was a Scottish painter. He started as a decorator and house painter, but got an interest in paintings. He travelled extensively in the Middle East, and to reach the Middle East he travelled through France. Here are some of his detailed paintings he made of Caen.

Samuel Prout was a British watercolourist, and one of the masters of watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. To earn a living, he painted marine pieces for Palser the printseller, took students, and published drawing books for learners.
He was one of the first to use lithography. He established his reputation with street scenes. At the time of his death there was hardly a place in France, Germany, Italy (especially Venice) or the Netherlands where his face had not been seen searching for antique gables and sculptured pieces of stone.
Ambrose Poynter was an English architect and one of the founding members of the Institute of British Architects in 1834. Poynter lived in Paris between 1830 and 1832, where Lavinia Forster (his mother-in-law from 1832) provided a social centre for artists. Adolphe Hervier, in full: Louis-Henri-Victor-Jules-François-Adolphe Hervier was a French painter and engraver, known for his rural genre scenes. Over his lifetime, his style changed from a strict Romanticism to an early type of Impressionism. Edward Alexander Wadsworth was an English artist, most famous for his close association with Vorticism. He painted, often in tempera, coastal views, abstracts, portraits and still-life. He was also an engraver on wood and copper. In the First World War he was involved in transferring dazzle camouflage designs onto ships for the Royal Navy, and after the war he continued to paint nautical themes. He painted one painting in Le Havre.
Joseph Mallord William Turner, known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. John Sell Cotman was an English marine and landscape painter, etcher, illustrator, author and a leading member of the Norwich School of painters. He was the son of rich merchants but did not follow in their footsteps. He travelled and painted extensively in Normandy.
