Caen

Caen is a regal city, once the capital for William the Conqueror. An enormous fortified castle is still there and can be visited.

Louis-Etienne Timmermans

Caen – The Artists – Timmermans, Louis-Etienne

Louis-Etienne Timmermans (1846 – 1910) was a Belgian painter, specialized in marine paintings and landscapes. He was a pupil of the Academie de Bruxelles and the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris.

Timmermans worked mostly in France, painting small coastal harbours, which he painted with a precise realism.

He died in 1910 in Paris. Not much else is known about him. Here are his works for Langrune-sur-Mer, a town close to Caen, Normandy.

Paul Huet

Caen – The Artists – Huet, Paul

Paul Huet was a French painter and printmaker born in Paris. He met the English painter Richard Parkes Bonington. Bonington’s example influenced Huet to reject neoclassicism and instead paint landscapes based on close observation of nature.

Huet’s works, which include oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, and lithographs, are Romantic in feeling.

Here is one painting he made outside of Caen, in Dives-sur-Mers.

Paul-Elie Gernez

Paul-Elie Gernez born in Onnaing on January 27, 1888 and died in Honfleur on September 6, 1948 is a French painter, watercolourist, engraver and illustrator.

Louis Valtat

Caen – The Artists – Valtat, Louis

Louis Valtat (1869 – 1952) was a French painter and printmaker associated with the Fauves (“the wild beasts”, so named for their wild use of color), who first exhibited together in 1905 at the Salon d’Automne. He is noted as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse.

He became good friends with Auguste Renoir. He did not paint in Caen itself, instead painted in nearby Ouistreham.

Emile-Andre Letellier

Emile-Andre Letellier (1833 – 1893) was a French photographer who worked almost exclusively in Normandy, France.

He became the Director of the monthly “Union photographique de France” magazine which was based in Le Havre, Normandy.

Felix Thorigny (1824, Caen – 1870, Paris) was a French master draughtsman, veduta painter and landscape painter. He worked extensively in Paris and London. Not much else is known about this artist.

Louis Boudan

Louis Boudan (16??–17??) was an artist who worked for François Roger de Gaignières, a French genealogist, antiquary and collector who was active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Almost all of his drawings are of the castles and churches to be found in France towards the end of the 17th and beginning 18th century. Many of the historical monuments he painted can still be seen today.

Henri Charles Guerard (1846 – 1897) was a French painter, engraver, lithographer and printer. He was born and died in Paris.

He married in 1879 to Eva Gonzales, painter, student, model and friend of Manet.

Not much else is known about this artist. Here is the one etching of his we found dealing with Caen, Normandy.

David Young Cameron

Caen – The Artists – Cameron, David Young

Sir David Young Cameron was a Scottish painter and etcher. Cameron was the son of the Rev. Robert Cameron and was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

As well as becoming well known as an etcher the artist also produced a great many oil paintings and watercolour sketches of landscapes and architectural subjects. Cameron’s earliest known oil painting dates to 1883.

Ambroise Louis Garneray

Ambroise Louis Garneray (1783 – 1857) was a French corsair, painter and writer. He was held as prisoner-of-war by the British for eight years .

He was in fact the first Peintre de la Marine.

William Raymond Dommersen

Caen – The Artists – Dommersen, William

William Raymond Dommersen, also Dommersheusen and Dommersheuzen, was a Dutch/English painter of Land- and Seascapes, Villages and Towns. He signed his work as W or WR Dommersen. Dommersen was born at the end of 1859 in Stratford, West Ham, London as the son of the Anglo / Dutch fine art painter Pieter Cornelis Dommersen and Anna Petronella Synja.

His parents had moved from the Netherlands in 1855 to London, England. Pre 1700 the family came from Dahlheim, near Koblenz, in Germany, so their family name was originally ‘Dommershausen’.

We found one of his paintings he made in Caen.

William Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner, known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.

He spent a lot of time painting in Normandy, despite that, we found only 2 of his painting of Caen.

Clarkson George Stanfield

Caen – The Artists – Stanfield, George Clarkson

George Clarkson Stanfield was an English painter. Stanfield was born in London, the second son from the second marriage of his painter father Clarkson Frederick Stanfield. He received his artistic training largely from his father, and painted the same class of subjects including landscape art and marine art. He attended the Royal Academy Schools, but was not formally enrolled.

He is best known for his topographical views painted during his visits to the Rhine Valley, the Moselle, Switzerland, and the Italian lakes.

He did not paint much in Normandy, but here’s the only painting we found of his from Caen.

Henry Thomas Schafer

Henry Thomas Schafer, aka Henry Thomas Schäfer, was a British painter who travelled extensively in Europe. But very little is known about this artist. He painted in quite a few places in Normandy. Here are his works he made in the city of Caen.

Eugene Lepoittevin

Caen – The Artists – Lepoittevin, Eugene

Eugène Lepoittevin was a French landscape painter, lithographer and caricaturist. He was appointed as Peintre de la Marine for the French Ministry of Defence in 1849. His work is exhibited in many museums in France and at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Johan Jongkind

Caen – The Artists – Jongkind, Johan

Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He painted marine landscapes in a free manner and is regarded as a forerunner of Impressionism. He spent quite some time on the coast of Normandy. Here is the only painting we found of his dealing with Caen.

Eugene Isabey

Caen – The Artists – Isabey, Eugene

Eugene Louis Gabriel Isabey was a French painter, lithographer and watercolorist in the Romantic style. He was born to Jean-Baptiste Isabey, a well known painter who enjoyed the patronage of the Imperial Family. Originally, he wanted to be a sailor, but his father insisted that he study painting; a turnabout from the usual situation where the family opposes an artistic career in favor of something more practical. He favored historical paintings, genre scenes and landscapes, but also executed numerous canvases depicting storms and shipwrecks; possibly reflecting his own thwarted career plans. He painted extensively in Normandy, but we’ve found only one painting of his dealing with the city of Caen.
