Henri Emile Benoit Matisse (1869 – 1954) was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.

Rosamund Constance Talbot (1837 – 1906) comes from a British artistic family. Her father, William Henry Fox Talbot, was one of the inventors of photography (he invented calotype). Her mother and siblings all were painters.

Her father “invented” photography because he could not paint. Her mother, Constance Talbot, was the first woman to ever make a photo.

Here is the 1 painting of her that we found which she made in Caudebec-en-Caux (now called Rives-en-Seine).

Louis Valtat

Lisieux – The Artists – Valtat, Louis

Louis Valtat (1869 – 1952) was a French painter and printmaker associated with the Fauves (“the wild beasts”, so named for their wild use of color), who first exhibited together in 1905 at the Salon d’Automne. He is noted as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse.

He became good friends with Auguste Renoir. Here are his paintings for a town close to Lisieux, Bernay.

Felix Thorigny

Felix Thorigny (1824, Caen – 1870, Paris) was a French master draughtsman, veduta painter and landscape painter. He worked extensively in Paris and London. Not much else is known about this artist.

Samuel Prout

Lisieux – The Artists – Prout, Samuel

Samuel Prout was a British watercolourist, and one of the masters of watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. To earn a living, he painted marine pieces for Palser the printseller, took students, and published drawing books for learners.

He was one of the first to use lithography. He established his reputation with street scenes. At the time of his death there was hardly a place in France, Germany, Italy (especially Venice) or the Netherlands where his face had not been seen searching for antique gables and sculptured pieces of stone.

Emile-Andre Letellier (1833 – 1893) was a French photographer who worked almost exclusively in Normandy, France.

He became the Director of the monthly “Union photographique de France” magazine which was based in Le Havre, Normandy.

Le Havre – Christmas 2022 is ready

The city of Le Havre is getting ready for Christmas. The annual Christmas decorations of the City Hall (=Mairie) are done… and as usual, they are very nice. Little elves running around (robots), moving and doing things.

Hundreds of children are gathered around these windows to admire the decorations. They’re coming in via busloads.

Thomas Colman Dibdin

Lisieux – The Artists – Dibdin, Thomas Colman

Thomas Robert Colman Dibdin (1810 – 1893) was an English watercolour artist and teacher. Dibdin was born in Bletchworth, Surrey. He first worked in a post office. He became an artist at the age of 28 and he went to France, Germany and Belgium.

He also did paintings in Gibraltar and India although the latter was created in England based on detailed sketches. In 1845 he published a guide to watercolour painting.

Frank Boggs was an American (and later French) painter (born in the USA, died in France). He studied art in Paris, and travelled between France (Normandy), The Netherlands, Italy and Belgium. He naturelized to French citizenship. He is buried next to his artist son in Paris.

Henri Le Sidaner

Le Havre – The Artists – Le Sidaner, Henri

Henri Eugene Augustin Le Sidaner (1862 – 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Edouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work.

Le Sidaner’s paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement .

Adrien Dauzats

Le Havre – The Artists – Dauzats, Adrien

Adrien Dauzats was a French landscape, genre painter and painter of Oriental subject matter. He travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and illustrated a number of books for the travel writer, Baron Taylor.

Despite travelling extensively in the Middle East, he also painted a lot on France.

Albert Lebourg

Deauville – The Artists – Lebourg, Albert

Albert Lebourg (1849 – 1928), birth name Albert-Marie Lebourg, also called Albert-Charles Lebourg and Charles Albert Lebourg, was a French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscape painter of the Rouen School (l’Ecole de Rouen). Member of the Societe des Artistes Francais, he actively worked in a luminous Impressionist style, creating more than 2,000 landscapes during his lifetime.
