Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that “Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau.”
Hubert Robert (1733 – 1808) was a French painter in the school of Romanticism, noted especially for his landscape paintings and capricci, or semi-fictitious picturesque depictions of ruins in Italy and of France.
He worked extensively in Italy and France. He was a lucky man, since he escape the guillotine due to a clerical error during the French revolution.
David Roberts was a Scottish painter. He started as a decorator and house painter, but got an interest in paintings. He travelled extensively in the Middle East, and to reach the Middle East he travelled through France.
Thomas Matthews Rooke (1842 – 1942) was a British watercolourist. He worked as a designer, as an assistant to other artists, and was commissioned by John Ruskin to make architectural drawings.
Marie Anatole Gaston Roullet (1847 – 1925), is a French painter and illustrator, appointed official painter of the Colonies and the Navy in 1885.
Roullet was a pupil of Jules Noel, whose daughter, Marie-Caroline, he married in 1874.
Appointed painter to the Navy and the departments of the Colonies, Roullet took part in the military campaigns of Tonkin in 1885.
One of the very few female artists we’ve been able to find that painted in Normandy. Anne Rushout is British and was a Lady. Not much else is known about her.
Henry Thomas Schafer, aka Henry Thomas Schäfer, was a British painter who travelled extensively in Europe. But very little is known about this artist.
He painted in quite a few places in Normandy.
Claude-Emile Schuffenecker (1851 – 1934) was a French Post-Impressionist artist, painter, art teacher and art collector. A friend of Paul Gauguin and Odilon Redon, and one of the first collectors of works by Vincent van Gogh.
Georges Pierre Seurat (1859 – 1891) was a French post-Impressionist artist. He devised the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism and used conté crayon for drawings on paper with a rough surface.
Seurat’s artistic personality combined qualities that are usually thought of as opposed and incompatible: on the one hand, his extreme and delicate sensibility, on the other, a passion for logical abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of mind.
Walter Richard Sickert RA RBA (1860 – 1942) was a British painter and printmaker who was a member of the Camden Town Group of Post-Impressionist artists in early 20th-century London. He was an important influence on distinctively British styles of avant-garde art in the mid- and late 20th century.
In the late 1880s he spent much of his time in France, especially in Dieppe, which he first visited in mid-1885, and where his mistress, and possibly his illegitimate son, lived.
Paul Victor Jules Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, working with Georges Seurat, helped develop the Pointillist style. He started training as an architect but quickly decided he wanted to be an artist.
William Frome Smallwood (1806 – 1834) was a British artist who made several paintings in France and the United Kingdom.
However, almost nothing else is known about this artist.
Sir Matthew Smith, CBE (1879 – 1959) was a British painter of nudes, still-life and landscape. He studied design at the Manchester School of Art and art at the Slade School of Art. Smith studied under Henri Matisse in Paris and acquired an interest in Fauvism. During World War I, he was wounded at the Battle of Passchendaele. In 1949, Smith was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). He was knighted in 1954.
Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793 – 1867) was a prominent English painter (often inaccurately credited as William Clarkson Stanfield) who was best known for his large-scale paintings of dramatic marine subjects and landscapes. He was the father of the painter George Clarkson Stanfield and the composer Francis Stanfield.
Until his death he contributed a long series of powerful and highly popular works to the Academy, both of marine subjects and landscapes from his travels at home and in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Ireland.
George Clarkson Stanfield was an English painter. Stanfield was born in London, the second son from the second marriage of his painter father Clarkson Frederick Stanfield. He received his artistic training largely from his father, and painted the same class of subjects including landscape art and marine art. He attended the Royal Academy Schools, but was not formally enrolled.
He is best known for his topographical views painted during his visits to the Rhine Valley, the Moselle, Switzerland, and the Italian lakes.
He did not paint much in Normandy.
Alfred Emile Leopold Stevens was a Belgian painter, known for his paintings of elegant modern women.
Rosamund Constance Talbot (1837 – 1906) comes from a British artistic family. Her father, William Henry Fox Talbot, was one of the inventors of photography (he invented calotype). Her mother and siblings all were painters.
Her father “invented” photography because he could not paint. Her mother, Constance Talbot, was the first woman to ever make a photo.
Siebe Johannes ten Cate (1858 – 1908) was a Dutch-Frisian painter in the Impressionist style, who spent most of his working life in France.
His favorite subjects were landscapes, city and harbor views, often populated with figures. Le Havre was one of his favorite locations.
Frits Thaulow was a Norwegian Impressionist painter, best known for his naturalistic depictions of landscape.
Felix Thorigny (1824, Caen – 1870, Paris) was a French master draughtsman, veduta painter and landscape painter. He worked extensively in Paris and London.
Not much else is known about this artist.
Georges William Thornley (1857 – 1935) was a French painter and printmaker. He was the son of a Welsh immigrant Morgan Thornley.
He travelled a lot in Normandy and Brittany. He was also know for making lithographs for his fellow artist friends like Claude Monet, Pissarro etc.
Louis-Etienne Timmermans (1846 – 1910) was a Belgian painter, specialized in marine paintings and landscapes. He was a pupil of the Academie de Bruxelles and the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris.
Timmermans worked mostly in France, painting small coastal harbours, which he painted with a precise realism.
He died in 1910 in Paris. Not much else is known about him.
Fernand-Fortune Truffault was a French painter. He was born in Trouville-sur-Mer. He studied art in Rouen, but not much is known about this artist.
Joseph Mallord William Turner, known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.
He spent a lot of time painting in Normandy.
