Georges William Thornley

Le Havre – The Artists – Thornley, Georges William

Georges William Thornley (1857 – 1935) was a French painter and printmaker. He was the son of a Welsh immigrant Morgan Thornley.

He travelled a lot in Normandy and Brittany. He was also know for making lithographs for his fellow artist friends like Claude Monet, Pissarro etc.

We found only one of his paintings of Le Havre.

Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.

He painted quite a few paintings in Normandy. Here is one drawing he made in Lisieux..

Albert Lebourg

Trouville-sur-Mer – The Artists – Lebourg, Albert

Albert Lebourg (1849 – 1928), birth name Albert-Marie Lebourg, also called Albert-Charles Lebourg and Charles Albert Lebourg, was a French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscape painter of the Rouen School. Member of the Societe des Artistes Francais, he actively worked in a luminous Impressionist style, creating more than 2,000 landscapes during his lifetime.

Albert Lebourg spent time in Rouen, Normandy, Algeria and The Netherlands. Here is 1 painting of his for Trouville-sur-Mer, Normandy.

Theodore Earl Butler

Theodore Earl Butler, (1861–1936) was an American impressionist painter. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Paris to study art. He befriended Claude Monet in Giverny, and married his stepdaughter, Suzanne Hoschedé. After her death he married her sister, Marthe Hoschede. Butler was a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists.

Member of the Societe des Artistes Francais, he actively worked in a luminous Impressionist style, creating more than 2,000 landscapes during his lifetime.

Albert Lebourg spent time in Rouen, Normandy, Algeria and The Netherlands.

Lebourg did not paint in Veules-les-Roses itself, instead painted nearby in Saint-Valery and Veulettes.

Samuel John Peploe

Veules-les-Roses – The Artists – Peploe, Samuel

Samuel John Peploe (1871 – 1935) was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter, noted for his still life works and for being one of the group of four painters that became known as the Scottish Colourists. The other colourists were John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell and Leslie Hunter.

Peploe was strongly influenced by French painting throughout his life. Here is the one painting of his we found which he made in Veules-les-Roses, Normandy.

Paul Signac

Veules-les-Roses – The Artists – Signac, Paul

Paul Victor Jules Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, working with Georges Seurat, helped develop the Pointillist style. He started training as an architect but quickly decided he wanted to be an artist.

Signac did not paint in Veules-les-Roses itself, instead he painted in the nearby town of Saint-Valery-en-Caux.
