Montlucon's Duke of Bourbon Castle

Montlucon – Introduction

Montlucon is located almost at the exact centre of France. It has traditionally been associated to the royal Bourbon family.

The city itself, dominated by the Bourbon family castle is very medieval looking & feeling with many narrow streets and old buildings.

The core part of the city, the centre, is for pedestrians only; no cars allowed which can be a problem if you have booked a hotel in the city centre. Most of the streets are cobblestoned, and you can find many restaurants, some who have been there for centuries.

The main thing to see is the castle of the Dukes of Bourbon (click here to read more about it). It dominates the city, and was built in the 13th and 14th century.

The castle itself is located on a hill, and around the hill are the castle’s fortified walls.

But anywhere you walk in the city centre, you will find narrow streets and many old, some centuries old, buildings. The whole feeling of the city is that you expect at anytime some knights galloping around on their horses.

One of 8 churches/chapels the city has is the Paroisse Sainte-Marie, which lies on the path of the pedestrian street in the city centre.

Montlucon is an interesting city to visit to get a feel of what life used to be during the Middle Ages. Not much has changed over time in the city centre. You smell the history when walking around the city.
