The Cite de la Voile Eric Tabarly museum

Lorient – Cite de la Voile Eric Tabarly Museum

If you are into sailing, then the name “Eric Tabarly” will probably be known to you. For those of you who don’t know the legendary French sailor, you can read more about him by clicking here.

The museum doesn’t just look at his life and sail races, but explores mostly the art of sailing.

The museum is located in “La Base” in Lorient (Brittany), at the beginning of the former WWII German enormous submarine pens.

The building is modern, in sharp contrast with the rest of the “La Base” buildings that are all enormous concrete structures dating back to the Second World War.

Inside the building, you will be met with a very wide, open and airy space. The building has been particularly well adapted to wheelchairs.

As mentioned, the life & exploits of Eric Tabarly are shown, but the focus of the museum is more in the art of sailing.

When sailors are racing long distance races (like the Jacques Fabres Transat, the Figaro Solitaire, the Volvo, etc), this is what they typically eat.

There are several areas where you can try your hand at sailing, but without getting wet. Remote controlled sailboats, simulators, etc … there are several areas for hands on experiences.

Conclusion

Even if you are not into sailing, this museum can be of interest. It shows you a lot of things about sailing that will hopefully make you understand why it’s such a popular sport/life style.
