Felix Thorigny (1824, Caen – 1870, Paris) was a French master draughtsman, veduta painter and landscape painter. He worked extensively in Paris and London. Not much else is known about this artist.

Le Havre – The Artists – Robert, Hubert

Hubert Robert (1733 – 1808) was a French painter in the school of Romanticism, noted especially for his landscape paintings and capricci, or semi-fictitious picturesque depictions of ruins in Italy and of France.

He worked extensively in Italy and France. He was a lucky man, since he escape the guillotine due to a clerical error during the French revolution.

François Gabriel Théodore Basset de Jolimont (1787 – 1854) was a French artist, lithographer, painter and antiquary.

Despite his talent and the volume of his work, de Jolimont always struggled with poor fortune.

Richard Parkes Bonington, a British artist who spent most of his life in France, died early (age 25), but managed to paint many paintings. His Romanticism Landscape style made him a popular painter in his generation.

Louis Boudan (16??–17??) was an artist who worked for François Roger de Gaignières, a French genealogist, antiquary and collector who was active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Almost all of his drawings are of the castles and churches to be found in France towards the end of the 17th and beginning 18th century. Many of the historical monuments he painted can still be seen today.

Louis Boudan (16??–17??) was an artist who worked for François Roger de Gaignières, a French genealogist, antiquary and collector who was active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Almost all of his drawings are of the castles and churches to be found in France towards the end of the 17th and beginning 18th century. Many of the historical monuments he painted can still be seen today.

Sir David Young Cameron was a Scottish painter and etcher. Cameron was the son of the Rev. Robert Cameron and was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

As well as becoming well known as an etcher the artist also produced a great many oil paintings and watercolour sketches of landscapes and architectural subjects. Cameron’s earliest known oil painting dates to 1883.

To our knowledge, Cameron did not paint in Le Havre itself, but in 2 of its suburbs, Harfleur and Montivilliers. Here are his works of art.

Gaston Bruelle

Le Havre – The Artists – Bruelle, Gaston

Gaston Bruelle (1849 – 1884) was a French painter of mostly marine paintings. Bruelle was a student of Jules Noel and exhibited in the “salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais” from 1869 to 1881. He also contributed to the weekly paper “Le Yacht” in 1993 with 8 paintings illustrating the regatas in Argenteuil, Rouen, Le Havre and Trouville.

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield

Le Havre – The Artists – Stanfield, Clarkson Frederick

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793 – 1867) was a prominent English painter (often inaccurately credited as William Clarkson Stanfield) who was best known for his large-scale paintings of dramatic marine subjects and landscapes. He was the father of the painter George Clarkson Stanfield and the composer Francis Stanfield.

Until his death he contributed a long series of powerful and highly popular works to the Academy, both of marine subjects and landscapes from his travels at home and in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Ireland.

Ambroise Louis Garneray

Caen – The Artists – Garneray, Ambroise Louis

Ambroise Louis Garneray (1783 – 1857) was a French corsair, painter and writer. He was held as prisoner-of-war by the British for eight years .

He was in fact the first Peintre de la Marine.

Paul Cesar Helleu

Deauville – The Artists – Helleu, Paul Cesar

Paul Cesar Helleu (1859 – 1927) was a French oil painter, pastel artist, drypoint etcher, and designer, best known for his numerous portraits of beautiful society women of the Belle Epoque. He also conceived the ceiling mural of night sky constellations for Grand Central Terminal in New York City. He was also the father of Jean Helleu and the grandfather of Jacques Helleu, both artistic directors for Parfums Chanel.

Helleu was commissioned in 1884 to paint a portrait of a young woman named Alice Guérin (1870–1933). They fell in love, and married on 28 July 1886. Throughout their lives together, she was his favourite model. Charming, refined and graceful, she helped introduce them to the aristocratic circles of Paris, where they became popular fixtures.

On his second trip to the United States in 1912, Helleu was awarded the commission to design was the ceiling decoration in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. He decided on a mural of a blue-green night sky covered by the starry signs of the zodiac that cross the Milky Way. Although the astrological design was widely admired, the ceiling was covered in the 1930s. It was completely restored in 1998.

While planning for a new exhibition with Jean-Louis Forain, he died in 1927 at age 67 of peritonitis following surgery in Paris. Among many of his friends was Coco Chanel, who chose beige as her signature colour upon on his advice—the colour of the sand on the beach of Biarritz in early morning. Both his son Jean Helleu and his grandson Jacques Helleu became artistic directors for Parfums Chanel.

Jean Dufy

Deauville – The Artists – Dufy, Jean

Jean Dufy, a French painter, was born in Le Havre and painted in the Fauvism, Impressionism, Modernism, and Cubism styles/movements. His older brother, Raoul Dufy, was also an artist and became Jean’s mentor.

He painted mostly in the Paris region, but did manage a few in Deauville. Here they are.
