Louis Adolphe Hervier

Artist: Hervier, Louis Adolphe

Adolphe Hervier, in full: Louis-Henri-Victor-Jules-François-Adolphe Hervier was a French painter and engraver, known for his rural genre scenes. Over his lifetime, his style changed from a strict Romanticism to an early type of Impressionism. He was the son of a painter.Despite being Parisian, his favorite painting locations were in Normandy; including Honfleur, Le Havre, Rouen and Granville.

Theodore Gudin

Artist: Gudin, Theodore

Theodore Gudin, a French artist, was the very first official painter/artist of the French Navy. For his work for the country, he was made a Baron.

Nikolay Gritsenko

Artist: Gritsenko, Nikolai

Nikolay Nikolayevich Gritsenko was a Russian painter who specialized in maritime art and seascapes. Born in Russia, he died in France. He joined the Russian Navy, saw and painted the world.

Norbert Goeneutte

Artist: Goeneutte, Norbert

Norbert Goeneutte was a Paris born painter/etcher, who started out working in a lawyer’s office, but this did not suit him. He then started a life as a painter, travelling through Europe.

Othon Friesz

Artist: Friesz, Othon

Othon Friesz, a Le Havre born artist and lifelong friend of Raoul Dufy, painted between Normandy and Paris.

Raoul Dufy

Artist: Dufy, Raoul

Raoul Dufy (1877 – 1953) was a French painter in the Fauvism, Impressionism, Modernism and Cubism movements. He was born in Le Havre where he studied arts in the local school. He (and his younger brother Jean Dufy) both painted a lot in Normandy.

He went to school in Le Havre and there became a longlife friend of fellow artist Othon Friesz.

Jean Dufy

Artist: Dufy, Jean

Jean Dufy, a French painter, was born in Le Havre and painted in the Fauvism, Impressionism, Modernism, and Cubism styles/movements. His older and more famous brother, Raoul Dufy, was also an artist and became Jean’s mentor. Jean painted mostly in the Paris region, but did manage quite a few in Normandy.

Louis-Alexandre Dubourg

Artist: Dubourg, Louis-Alexandre

Louis-Alexandre Dubourg is a French painter, born and died in Honfleur. He worked as a commercial agent, painting as a serious hobby. It was only after meeting with a professional artist that he decided to paint for a living.

He mostly painted cities in Normandy.

Louis Philippe Crepin

Artist: Crepin, Louis-Philippe

Louis-Philippe Crépin was a French marine painter. Together with Theodore Gudin, he was appointed as one of France’s first two Peintres de la Marine in 1830.

His best known painting is Combat de la frégate française La Bayonnaise contre la frégate anglaise l’Embuscade 14 décembre 1798, which was commissioned by Napoleon for display at the Tuileries. It was shown at the Salon in 1801. Until 1834, it was hung in the former residence of the Empress at the Château de Saint-Cloud, then was transferred to Versailles by King Louis Philippe I.

John Sell Cotman

Artist: Cotman, John Sell

John Cotman, a British painter, was quite active in Normandy. He spent a lot of time painting in Caen and Ouistreham (suburb of Caen).

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot

Artist: Corot, Jean-Baptiste Camille

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was a French painter of the Realism movement. He travelled extensively between France and Italy. Although he did paint in a few cities in Normandy, most of his works centers around Italy.

Alexander Beggrov

Artist: Beggrov, Alexander

Alexander Beggrov, a Russian artist/painter, who travelled all over the world for the Russian Navy. He only painted one painting in Normandy.

Edward William Cooke

Artist: Cooke, Edward William

Edward William Cooke was an English landscape and marine painter, and gardener. Cooke was born in London, the son of well-known line engraver George Cooke; his uncle, William Bernard Cooke, was also a line engraver of note, and Edward was raised in the company of artists. He spent many years in The Netherlands and in Venice, Italy, but despite all his travels he managed to paint quite a lot of places in Normandy.

Jules Coignet

Artist: Coignet, Jules

Jules Coignet, was a French painter who specialized in Idealists and Realists Landscape paintings. He travelled extensively in France and even in Europe, painting many of the landmarks in cities. Unfortunately, there are not many of his painting left.

Milly Childers

Artist: Childers, Milly

Emily Maria Eardley Childers, known as Milly Childers, was an English painter of the later Victorian era and the early twentieth century. She was the daughter of Hugh Childers, a prominent Member of Parliament and Cabinet minister of his generation. Little is known about Milly Childers’s early life; she began exhibiting her art around 1890. After her father’s 1892 retirement from public service, father and daughter traveled together through England and France; Milly Childers painted landscapes and church interiors. Her father’s social and political connections brought his daughter some commissioned work, including as a restorer and copyist for Lord Halifax at Temple Newsam. Childers exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois.

William Callow

Artist: Callow, William

William Callow was an English landscape painter, engraver and water colourist. He travelled extensively in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, had a large number of pupils, and enjoyed favour with the royal family.

John Burgess Jr.

Artist: Burgess Jr, John

John Burgess Junior was a British artist. He was part of the Burgess dynasty of artists; son of John Cart Burgess (an English watercolour painter of flowers and landscapes, and an author of two books on art technique) and Charlotte Smith (a talented sculptress and silver medal winner at the Royal Academy).

Thomas Shotter Boys

Artist: Boys, Thomas Shotter

Thomas Boys was born at London. He was articled to the engraver George Cooke. When his apprenticeship came to an end he went to Paris where he met and came under the influence of Richard Parkes Bonington, who persuaded him to abandon engraving for painting.

Eugene Louis Boudin

Artist: Boudin, Eugene-Louis

Eugene Boudin is a real Normandy based artist, born and died in Normandy. He was an Impressionist painter and a close friend of Claude Monet. He was the son of a harbour pilot who later went on and set up a picture framing and stationery shop. His son took to the business and later set up his own shop, putting him in contact with many artists. At the age of 22 he started painting.

Richard Parkes Bonington

Artist: Bonington, Richard Parkes

Richard Parkes Bonington, a British artist who spent most of his life in France, died early (age 25), but managed to paint many paintings. His Romanticism Landscape style made him a popular painter in his generation.

Frank Myers Boggs

Artist: Boggs, Frank Myers

Frank Boggs was an American (and later French) painter (born in the USA, died in France). He studied art in Paris, and travelled between France (Normandy), The Netherlands, Italy and Belgium. He naturelized to French citizenship. He is buried next to his artist son in Paris.

George Binet

Artist: Binet, George

Georges Binet was born 1865 in Le Havre (and died 1949 in Toulon). He is a French painter known mostly for his Normandy paintings of daily life, including beaches and river scenes.

Edouard Marie Adam

Artist: Adam, Edouard-Marie

Edouard-Marie Adam (1847-1929), a French painter who lived a big part of his life in Le Havre (he moved there with his English wife in 1873), specialized in painting ships.
