Lady Mary Louisa Bruce

Artist: Bruce, Mary Louisa, Countess of Elgin and Kincardine

Mary Louisa Bruce, Countess of Elgin and Kincardine was the daughter of John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham and his second wife Louisa Elizabeth Lambton, daughter of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. She travelled to Canada twice: the first time when her father went to Canada to investigate the Lower Canada Rebellion in 29 May – 1 November 1838. She later returned to Canada with her husband, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, from 1847 to 1853.

An accomplished artist, she studied under John Richard Coke-Smyth, alongside her sister, Lady Emily Augusta, and travel companion, Katherine Ellice. She wrote and illustrated journals and diaries of her international travels.

Edward Wadsworth

Artist: Wadsworth, Edward

Edward Alexander Wadsworth was an English artist, most famous for his close association with Vorticism. He painted, often in tempera, coastal views, abstracts, portraits and still-life. He was also an engraver on wood and copper. In the First World War he was involved in transferring dazzle camouflage designs onto ships for the Royal Navy, and after the war he continued to paint nautical themes.

William Turner

Artist: Turner, William

Joseph Mallord William Turner, known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.

He spent a lot of time painting in Normandy.

Fritz Thaulow

Artist: Thaulow, Fritz

Frits Thaulow was a Norwegian Impressionist painter, best known for his naturalistic depictions of landscape.

Alfred Stevens

Artist: Stevens, Alfred

Alfred Emile Leopold Stevens was a Belgian painter, known for his paintings of elegant modern women.

Clarkson George Stanfield

Artist: Stanfield, George Clarkson

George Clarkson Stanfield was an English painter. Stanfield was born in London, the second son from the second marriage of his painter father Clarkson Frederick Stanfield. He received his artistic training largely from his father, and painted the same class of subjects including landscape art and marine art. He attended the Royal Academy Schools, but was not formally enrolled.

He is best known for his topographical views painted during his visits to the Rhine Valley, the Moselle, Switzerland, and the Italian lakes.

He did not paint much in Normandy.

Paul Signac

Artist: Signac, Paul

Paul Victor Jules Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, working with Georges Seurat, helped develop the Pointillist style. He started training as an architect but quickly decided he wanted to be an artist.

Henry Thomas Schafer

Artist: Schafer, Henry Thomas

Henry Thomas Schafer, aka Henry Thomas Schäfer, was a British painter who travelled extensively in Europe. But very little is known about this artist.

He painted in quite a few places in Normandy.

Anne Rushout

Artist: Rushout, Anne

One of the very few female artists we’ve been able to find that painted in Normandy. Anne Rushout is British and was a Lady. Not much else is known about her.

David Roberts

Artist: Roberts, David

David Roberts was a Scottish painter. He started as a decorator and house painter, but got an interest in paintings. He travelled extensively in the Middle East, and to reach the Middle East he travelled through France.

Samuel Prout

Artist: Prout, Samuel

Samuel Prout was a British watercolourist, and one of the masters of watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. To earn a living, he painted marine pieces for Palser the printseller, took students, and published drawing books for learners.

He was one of the first to use lithography. He established his reputation with street scenes. At the time of his death there was hardly a place in France, Germany, Italy (especially Venice) or the Netherlands where his face had not been seen searching for antique gables and sculptured pieces of stone.

Ambrose Poynter

Artist: Poynter, Ambrose

Ambrose Poynter was an English architect and one of the founding members of the Institute of British Architects in 1834. Poynter lived in Paris between 1830 and 1832, where Lavinia Forster (his mother-in-law from 1832) provided a social centre for artists. He became friends with many artists and painted several places in Normandy.

Camille Pissarro

Artist: Pissarro, Camille

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.

He painted quite a few paintings in Normandy

Charles-Francois Pecrus

Artist: Pecrus, Charles Francois

Charles Pecrus was born in the Centre of France (Limoges) but was quickly discovered and moved to Paris to study art.

Napoleon III even bought one of his paintings.

Claude Monet

Artist: Monet, Claude

Claude Monet is without any doubt the most famous impressionist painter. He started the movement, and he was the master of it.

Although he was born in Paris, France (and died in Giverny, Normandy, France), his heart was Normandy, particularly the Normandy coastline. His family moved to Le Havre in 1845 where his father wanted him to join the family ship-chandling business, but instead he decided to become an artist.

Maxime Maufra

Artist: Maufra, Maxime

Maxime Maufra was a French landscape and marine painter, etcher and lithographer. He painted quite a few paintings in Normandy.

Albert Marquet

Artist: Marquet, Albert

Albert Marquet was a French painter, associated with the Fauvist movement. He initially became one of the Fauve painters and a lifelong friend of Henri Matisse. Marquet subsequently painted in a more naturalistic style, primarily landscapes, but also several portraits and, between 1910 and 1914, several female nude paintings.

He painted many paintings throughout Europe, including many of the Normandy coast.

Gustave Loiseau

Gustave Loiseau was a French Post-Impressionist painter, remembered above all for his landscapes and scenes of Paris streets. However he did paint a lot in Normandy,

Luigi Loir

Artist: Loir, Luigi

Luigi Loir, a French painter and lithographer, born in Austria. He amongst other illustrated one of Jules Verne’s book.

Auguste Xavier Leprince

Artist: Leprince, Auguste-Xavier

Auguste-Xavier Leprince was a French painter, drawer and engraver, best known for his paintings of agrarian scenes. His father, Anne Pierre Leprince, was a painter and a lithographer. His brothers, Leopold Leprince and Gustave Leprince, were also painters. He painted Parisian street scenes and landscapes.

He also did paintings depicting the farming life in rural France. For example, his 1822 painting La moisson showed labourers harvesting a field.

His 1823 painting, Embarquement des bestiaux sur le Passager dans le port de Honfleur (Embarkation of Cattle on the Passager at the Port of Honfleur), became emblematic of the cattle paintings of that era. It once belonged to Charles X and is currently in the Louvre.

Eugene Lepoittevin

Artist: Lepoittevin, Eugene

Eugène Lepoittevin was a French landscape painter, lithographer and caricaturist. He was appointed as Peintre de la Marine for the French Ministry of Defence in 1849. His work is exhibited in many museums in France and at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Stanislas Lepine

Artist: Lepine, Stanislas

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lepine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine. He was born in Caen, Normandy.

Georges William Thornley

Le Havre – The Artists – Thornley, Georges William

Georges William Thornley (1857 – 1935) was a French painter and printmaker. He was the son of a Welsh immigrant Morgan Thornley.

He travelled a lot in Normandy and Brittany. He was also know for making lithographs for his fellow artist friends like Claude Monet, Pissarro etc.

We found only one of his paintings of Le Havre.

Georges William Thornley
